Babies, Brothers And Belly Buttons

Posted by Ling on January 27, 2004

With final exams coming soon, I am feeling rather stressed but there is one thing which always makes me smile – BABIES!!!

For those who don’t know me, I want 6 babies!!  I have always wanted a baby!!

I remember we had a church discussion in 1996/7 and one of the questions was “If you knew you were going to die in 1 years time, what would you do?”

People said they would travel the world, spend time with family and friends, etc.

I said, “I’d have a baby!”

You should have seen their alarmed faces.

I may not be able to see the baby grow up, but at least I brought something into this world and maybe he/she could make a difference…

I am the eldest of 7 children!  Yes, big sister to 3 girls and 3 boys.  I started babysitting when I was 8 years old.  My parents used to work in the Chinese takeaway and we were left at home.  Shh!  Don’t tell social workers!

It was a tough time because I was only a kid and I still feel semi-guilty to this day because I don’t think I did a good job in taking care of them.  I mean, they’re alive and kicking, but I was not a good sister.

Back when it was just me and 3 sisters (as the brothers weren’t born yet), I would be selfish and eat 3 packets of crisps and let my sisters share 1 packet of crisps between the 3 of them!!!  I am so horrible!!!  We would also have these physical fights and being the biggest back then (I am now the smallest!), I would win!

Anyway, taking care of 6 siblings made me mature very quickly.  I would feed, bathe and clothe these kids and I would feel like a young mother.

When my brothers were born, their first words weren’t “Mama” or “Dada” - it was “Jeh Jeh” – which is big sister in Chinese.

Having to study away from home means I have less family time.  When I go back for visits, I am surprised to see how much my siblings have grown, especially my young brothers.

Bro 5 – He’s nearly 12 years old now and going through puberty.  I collected him from Scouts the other night and he said to his leader, “That’s my big sister.  Do you think she’s pretty?  She’s not got a boyfriend!” *embarrassing*

Bro 6 – He’s 8 years old and such a sweetie.  I went home for a visit and he ran to me and gave me a big hug.  So adorable!

Bro 7 – He’s just turned 6 years old.  I had no-one to talk to the other night so I basically told him all my problems while he watching TV.  It was so funny, you should have seen his confused face.

Before anyone starts judging my mother, please don’t!  She is the most amazing woman ever!  We had a terrible relationship when I was younger but now things are cool!  There is one thing I am hiding from her though – my belly button piercing!  I got it pierced about a year ago, but I haven’t summoned the courage to tell her yet.  She might flip!

In conclusion : I miss my family!
