Confessions Of A Dishwasher
Posted by Ling on February 16, 2010
Cooking for one person is difficult. Sometimes I eat junk food rather than cook a meal. Most of the time, I just eat out because the food in Sydney is amazing! When I do cook, I just put everything either into a frying pan and do a quick stir-fry or I boil everything.
And then when I do the dishwashing, I just half-heartedly rinse it under the tap. I don’t bother scrubbing it to remove every crusty bit because none of the cooking utensils or equipment are exclusively mine in the flat I share with 6 other people. The chances are someone else will use these crusty plates before I use it again. This does mean that when I do use any plates or spoons, I thoroughly clean it and rinse it before I use it.
However, I have been eating a lot of homecooked food recently as I am currently in Melbourne, where the boyfriend lives. He stays with two guys from New Zealand and they take it in turns to cook and clean.
Yesterday, I decided to help out with the dishwashing.
Mr Dorky, the boyfriend and I are of Chinese origin – which in dishwashing terms means – Wash, Rinse and Dry.
But because of various factors – including living with two Caucasians and the Melbourne water restrictions – he has omitted the Rinse phase of dishwashing!
As I was drying the dishes, my face was crinkled with disgust and fear when I saw the amount of washing-up liquid foam which was glued to these dishes, cups and cutlery. URGH!!!
They just laughed at me and said that washing-up liquid foam is not harmful. I am not so sure. Have there been any studies done??? And what if I turn into one of them – Wash and Dry, No Rinse Dishwasher??? I have gone against my Chinese upbringing – will my mother forgive me???
To change the subject and to calm my (foam-filled) heart, I shall leave you all with a picture of food porn…

This is The Big Ass Breakfast cooked by Mr Dorky. Includes two fried eggs, two lamb and feta sausages, grilled tomato, fried mushrooms and onions, avocado and two slices of buttered toast. The name is derived from the fact that you get a big ass with daily ingestion!
(Please note : the plate was rinsed and thoroughly inspected by me before using!)
