Learn Something New Today
Posted by Ling on January 22, 2011
I am sure that everyone has heard the saying, “You learn something new every day“. I’ve been married for a few months now and it’s been a tremendous learning experience. In regards to the Husband, I have learnt that :-
1. He sleep talks
So far, I have heard him say the following in his sleep :- “wax knife“, “Doberman” and “Hey Charlie, what’s happenin’? Duuuude!” Weird or what?!
2. He looks up to his big brother
Being the eldest of 7 children (yes, my parents had nothing better to do!), I have not had the experience of having a big brother. But there is something funny about brotherhood (which I, being female, will never understand) – little brothers admire and follow their big brothers. I never noticed it before, but my Husband has this secret admiration for his big brother. Whenever I tease him about it, he has this goofy cheesy smile. It’s sweet. (By the way, I don’t see my younger siblings admiring me – pfft! They like to bully me because I am the shortest – haha!)
3. His lips tell a story
I can tell his mood by reading his lips! When he is annoyed, his lips form a thin, rigid line. When he is attempting to tell a lie, his lips do a funny twitch. Basically, he uses his lips to express things.
I, on the other hand, use my eyes and brows to express things. I have been trying to get the Hubby to learn my different eyes, but sometimes, he just doesn’t get it. For example, I was using the “I wanna go home now!” eyes when we were out one night and he so did not get it.
Anyway, in case you haven’t learnt anything recently, here are some examples for you :-
1. Always wet hands before using handwash.
If you read instructions on the back of any bottle of handwash, they all tell you to wet your hands first. However, not many people know this and I see many people pumping handwash into their dry hands and then turn on the water to wash them. By wetting your hands first, the water forms a barrier between the skin on your hands and the handwash and this will keep your hands protected from the chemicals and prevent the skin from drying out.
2. If you swallow gum, it does not stay in your stomach forever.
My Mum fed me this myth when I was younger and I always thought chewing gum would stick to my intestines but it’s not true. Our digestive system cannot breakdown the resin found in gum, but the gum is able to travel down the digestive tract and it’s final destination is in your poo!
(Also, did your parents tell you that if you swallowed seeds of oranges, your head would grow a plant? Bad parents!!! Haha!)
3. When typing, you should only use one space after a full stop.
I was taught the old school way and I have always used two spaces after a full stop. But according to this recent article, I am wrong. Boo! Nevertheless, I shall continue with my wrong typography skills because I think it looks better with two spaces.
Time for you to share anything new you have learnt recently. Leave your answer in the comments please. Thank you.

Yay for learning new things everyday! hehe
I was always taught to use only one space after a full stop ….maybe it depends on the school and place? Haha v.v? MY PARENTS FED ME THAT LIE TOO SAYING THAT I WOULD HAVE CHEWING GUM IN ME FOREVER ;_; I accidentally swallowed it once and freaked out so much lolol.
And argh, I understand the whole “boyfriend/hubby doesn’t get the signals” – I’ve tried doing faces at my bf telling him things like “stop talking about that” or something but HE DOESN’T GET ITTTT
urgh.

@Melody, Or maybe I was taught wrong?? Too late now, it’s a habit of mine.
I bet when we become Mums, we will also tell our children the same chewing gum lie to stop them swallowing it haha.
I think guys are just clueless sometimes…but we still love them hehe

OH MY GOSH! I do exactly the same thing!! And then I was typing an essay in front of my friend *from* the same year level as me, and he said, “you put two spaces after your full stops?” and I was like, “yeah, that’s what one always does!” and he said “what? since when? that’s weirdd” and I thought I was crazy but yes exactly thanks for clearing that up.
