To Gamble Or Not To Gamble?

Posted by Ling on October 13, 2011

Before anyone panics and tells my Mother, an ex-gambler, that I may have inherited the gambling gene, I just want to point out that I am not talking about this type of gambling where you get money if you hit the jackpot, I’m talking about babies.  For those who are new around here, you may want to start reading about the day the Husband and I found out we have a blood disorder which together can make an “incompatible with life” baby.  We aren’t planning to have kids yet, but we need to know answers to make informed decisions.

A few weeks ago, we went to see the Obstetrician – a doctor who deals with women’s reproductive system..most likely a Gynaecologist at the same time as well.  (And can someone tell me why there are so many male Obs/Gyn???!!!  Do the words Father Green in French come to mind…?  Okay, sorry…I’m so rude haha!)  Didn’t blog about the visit so I do apologise but he was one of the most professional doctors I have seen for a long long time!  Spoke well, answered questions, VERY helpful and maintained good eye contact.  Couldn’t stop praising him afterwards because he restored some of my faith in the Aussie healthcare system.

And then yesterday, we went to see the geneticist at the IVF clinic.  It started off really badly because we got taken into the office and the Nurse started talking about the prices.  I was like, “Wait a minute!  Why are we talking about prices?”  She said, “No, we’re not going to get you to sign anything and make you pay…blah blah blah…”  And guess what?  It was a case of mistaken identity.  Wrong couple.  But the prices were enough to put me off.

By the time we did sit down to chat to the Geneticist, I let the Husband do more talking than he done at the visit with the Obstetrician.  Instead, I analysed the Geneticist.  Looks like a lab geek with glasses and geeky hairdo – tick!  Dresses like a lab geek – tick!  Talks like a lab geek – tick!  Mannerisms of a lab geek – tick!

Yes, as you can see, I was not paying attention.  I lost interest when I learnt about the high costs.  There is no way, with Hubby’s apprentice wages plus my 1-day a week job, that we will be able to afford IVF.  We can barely pay our day-to-day living costs, without my parents’ support.

I know!  Damn me for being 31 and still living off my parents!!  Damn him for living off his wife and her parents!!  LOLOLOL!!!

So there you go – with no means of being able to afford all the expenses involved in IVF, would you gamble?

So if we gambled, we would either have :-

a)  1 in 4 chance of baby having the problem which means death becomes it…
b)  3 in 4 chance of healthy baby – yay!

But if it is a), then there are more problems to face and that is – To Abort Or Not To Abort? – bearing in mind our Christian beliefs…

And I shall leave it there…

Till next time…
